EYE MASK OR NO?
We're all seeing the stunning silk eye masks hitting our favourite beauty sites, and who doesn't want to evoke the timeless glam of Holly Golightly in her saucy eye mask in Breakfast at Tiffanys?!? So we did some research to make sure these dreamy little sleep accessories were enhancing your sleep and not doing anything naughty to our skin.
Check out these 4 things you should know:
TURN THE LIGHTS DOWN LOW
Light instigates brain activity, so by using a sleep mask to block out light it can assist you in having a much better sleep. When you are in dark, calm places, your brain produces Melatonin which helps regulate and control our sleep cycles, so naturally being in sheer black behind the eye mask should induce more Melatonin therefore a better sleep.
THEY ARE IN YOUR BUSINESS (SKIN BUSINESS)
Because eye masks are pressed up against your face, they will draw moisture from your skin and can also harbour bacteria colonies. Use with caution if you do have sensitive skin. To mitigate the risks, make sure your sleep mask is breathable like silk or cotton and you should wash it frequently in warm/hot water to cleanse thoroughly (no fabric softener though!!)
THEY'RE ALSO IN YOUR EYE BUSINESS TOO BABE!
Make sure the eye mask isn't too tight around your head - finding the right balance is tricky. Tight enough to stay in place, loose enough for comfort and safety. If your eye mask is too tight, it can create pressure on your eyes and cause blurry vision or headaches. There is also the chance of eye infections, but this is more prevalent if you already have an eye infection and reuse the eye mask without washing it eek.
MAKE IT A DYNAMIC DUO!
When paired with ear plugs, this creates a very sleep-friendly environment with dimmed noise + pitch blackness. This perfect pair promotes a good sleep and also a healthy balance of hormones - an especially good combo if you're unwell and in dire need of some restorative sleep.
So, in conclusion, may I remind you that it does not say RSVP on the statue of liberty.. no, wait. In conclusion, eye-masks offer great benefits to help improve how deep your sleep is, but like anything, make sure you're aware of the risks and how to make the most out of it e.g. getting a good quality material, and washing it frequently.
